How to Choose Replacement Nasal Pillows and Cushions
The wrong size nasal pillow causes leaks, discomfort, and poor therapy. Here's how to find your correct size and choose the right replacement cushions.
Nasal pillow cushions are one of the most frequently replaced CPAP components — and one of the most important to get right. The wrong size or a worn-out cushion means air leaks, discomfort at the nose, and disrupted sleep. Here's how to get it right.
What Size Nasal Pillow Do You Need?
Start with the sizing and fitting instructions for your exact mask. A size label from one mask is not a universal measurement, and gender does not determine the correct size. If the seal is uncomfortable or leaks despite following the fitting guide, ask your equipment provider to check the fit rather than automatically choosing a smaller cushion.
Signs You Have the Wrong Size
Discomfort, a cushion that will not sit as shown in the fitting guide, or ongoing leaks are reasons to have the fit checked. They do not identify the correct size on their own. Do not keep tightening headgear to compensate for a cushion that does not fit, and ask your care team about persistent pain or skin changes.
When to Replace Cushions
Follow the replacement guidance for your cushion and inspect it during cleaning. Tears, damage, or a shape that no longer forms the intended seal need attention. Ask your equipment provider whether replacement is appropriate; do not assume that every leak means a worn cushion or that one calendar schedule suits every material.
Kits vs. Individual Cushions
Buying a replacement kit that includes multiple sizes (like the LullaPad Nasal Pillow Replacement Kit, which includes S, M, and L) is a smart approach if you're unsure of your size or want to try a different fit. That kit includes the frame and short tube. The head strap is not included.
Cleaning for Longer Life
ResMed's general guidance describes daily cleaning for silicone mask cushions, followed by thorough rinsing and drying. Check the specific mask guide for the suitable cleanser and method. Memory-foam cushions need different care: keep them dry and never rinse, soak, or submerge them. Use an alcohol-free wipe only as directed by their manufacturer.
Manufacturer resources
Check the guidance for your specific equipment before changing its care routine. Different materials and models can require different cleaning methods.
Use the sizing and fitting guide for your specific mask, and ask your equipment provider for a fit check if it remains uncomfortable or leaks.
