Why Your CPAP Water Chamber Gets Cloudy

Mineral residue can make a CPAP chamber look cloudy, but appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Follow the chamber's care guide and check for damage.

A foggy surface or white film in your humidifier chamber is a reason to check its care instructions. Mineral residue is one possible explanation, but appearance alone does not identify the cause. Inspect the chamber for cracks, leaks, and changes to its seals as well.

One Possible Cause: Mineral Residue

Tap water can leave mineral residue as it evaporates. The recommended water type and cleaning routine depend on your machine and chamber. ResMed's guidance recommends distilled water for its humidifier tubs, but that still requires regular cleaning and inspection.

The Fix: Switch to Distilled Water

Use distilled water when your machine's instructions specify it. Empty leftover water and dry the chamber as directed instead of continually topping it up. Changing the water type will not repair damage or remove residue that is already present.

How to Clean Mineral Buildup

Follow the cleaning solution, dilution, temperature, and timing in the user guide supplied with your specific chamber. Do not apply one vinegar recipe to all tubs: the manufacturer's instructions and the chamber's materials control what is suitable. Rinse and dry the chamber as directed. If its care guide is missing, ask your equipment provider before trying a cleaning mixture.

When to Replace the Chamber

Persistent cloudiness does not prove that minerals have etched the plastic. Ask your equipment provider to assess residue or odor that remains after approved cleaning. Cracks, leaks, or a damaged seal also need attention. If replacement is advised, match the new chamber to your machine series; S10 and S11 chambers are not interchangeable and neither fits Luna G3.
